Greenon Local Schools hosted a successful Literacy Day this past Saturday, joining forces with the Ohio Federation of Teachers (OFT) to empower parents with tools and strategies to support their children's reading at home. Held at Greenon Elementary, the event was part of a statewide literacy initiative in collaboration with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), aligning with Governor Mike DeWine's Science of Reading initiative.
Led by Lisa Storm, Instructional Specialist and IMSE Orton Gillingham Certified Instructor, at Greenon Local Schools, the event aimed to empower parents with valuable tools, skills, and tips to support their children's literacy development at home. Parents left the event equipped with strategies aligned with Ohio's Science of Reading initiative, which emphasizes phonics and reading fluency. Families were also provided free books through partnerships with First Book and the AFT's Reading Opens the World program, helping to build home libraries and encourage a love for reading.
The event was also made possible through the support of Greenon Local Schools Board of Education, the Greenon Knights PTO, and the Greenon Local Literacy Team. Their commitment to advancing literacy is deeply appreciated.
“I’m so proud of this event and the ongoing work we’re doing at Greenon to connect with and support families, particularly around literacy” said Lisa Storm. “Stay tuned, there’s more to come!”
