The Greenon Local School Board of Education has taken initial formal steps to propose a permanent improvement tax levy to fund the construction of a new transportation garage and multipurpose room at the current Greenon athletic facility. The Board has determined that a levy of 1.99 mills is necessary to generate the required revenue for this permanent improvement project.

The estimated cost for the new transportation garage is approximately $2.1 million. Funds from the levy will also be used to add a multipurpose room at the current Greenon athletic facility, which will serve multiple sports teams and community organizations and provide space for various activities and events.

Greenon Local Treasurer Garth Whitaker provided detailed information regarding the financial implications of the proposed levy. According to Whitaker, the 1.99 mill levy would generate about $746,518 in revenue annually for a five-year period and would cost a taxpayer in the District approximately $70.00 per year per $100,000 in appraised property valuation on the Clark County Auditor's website.

Superintendent Darrin Knapke stated, "it will serve our maintenance, operations, and transportation departments, which provide critical services for our students and staff.”  As for the multipurpose room addition, Superintendent Knapke commented that “it will serve as a useful and practical asset for our sports teams and the wider community, providing greater access.”  Superintendent Knapke added “we understand the financial commitment these projects require from our community, and we are committed to providing transparency and accountability throughout the process."

The Board will move forward with voting on a resolution to place the levy on the ballot for a vote at the election on November 5, 2024. The Greenon Local School Board of Education meetings are open for community members to learn more about the proposed levy, the transportation garage, and multipurpose room projects.  The Board would like to encourage community members to attend scheduled board meetings to ask questions and to hear more detailed information about the projects and their relevance to the Board’s desires to improve these areas of District operations.
