Second-grade Greenon students were treated to a special visit from weather specialist Nick Dunn. The visit was a follow-up to Dunn's participation at the school's Career Day, where he presented to 7th-12th grade students with his insights into meteorology and weather forecasting.
Dunn, a current Weather Specialist for WHIO, tailored his presentation to align with Ohio's second-grade science standards unit on wind. He also taught essential topics such as tornadoes and safety precautions with severe weather season coming soon.
"I was so impressed by how many students already knew what to do in the event of tornadoes," Dunn said, reflecting on the students' preparedness. "The second graders were well-behaved, and I was happy to see all the engagement. I hope to come back!"
Mrs. Penewit, the Greenon second-grade teacher who organized his visit, was impressed with Dunn's ability to connect with the young audience. "Mr. Dunn did a great job engaging our students with great visuals," she remarked. "My personal favorite was the donut example: a glazed donut represents ice, and a donut with sprinkles represents sleet. It was a great visual for the kids!"
As severe weather season approaches, the lessons by Dunn will empower these second-grade students with the knowledge and confidence to navigate potential hazards safely. The Greenon staff appreciates his commitment to education and outreach, and his visit exhibits professionals' impact on shaping students' learning.
